that is also a nightmare (from our point of view). As in Fahrenheit 451, we have a mass society that has lost all genuine diversity and individualism. It is, in a sense, a large mental hospital, with everyone required to take a daily dose of tranquilizers and wear bracelet IDs that monitor their every move. This ensures that any creative or independent thinking stays deeply repressed, and that the political power remains in the hands of UNI's technological elite. It all looks like a corporate theme park, in effect, and it is clear that Levin saw our society, in 1970, as heading in that direction (a less shocking prediction thirty years later, I would think). The hero of the novel, Chip, for a host of complicated reasons, becomes disillusioned with the UNI world and learns how to deceive the controllers and reduce his daily drug intake. As his head begins to clear, he meets a few other individuals who have stumbled onto the possibility of freedom and detoxification, and who have also begun to lead double lives. They break into the "pre-UNI museum," which records, in effect, the lost world of the Enlightenment tradition, in which creativity, art, and individual choice were the order of the day. Chip and his friends sort through the ancient texts in the museum and piece together a picture of what pre-UNI life must have been like. After a number of elaborate twists and turns, Chip decides that the only solution to the cultural hypnosis and political control exerted by UNI is to take it on and destroy it. In an Ian Fleming-like way, he undertakes the cosmic battle required, coming face-to-face in the process with evil incarnate, the rulers of UNI, a man named Wei (over two hundred years old) and his select group of disciples.
